La historia sitúa su aparición en un lejano 1587, año en que cobró absoluto protagonismo al tratar de frenar la avanzada de los soldados españoles en el sur de Chile. Y lo hizo liderando un ejército de cientos de guerreros bajo una misma bandera: la venganza y la defensa del territorio. Janekeo había sufrido la pérdida de su marido, el lonco Wepotaén, a manos de los conquistadores lo que fue el detonante para transformarse en símbolo de la resistencia y la búsqueda de justicia. Así fue que logró cosas casi imposibles para la época. Fue investida como lonco y guió a los hombres en batalla. Por la naturaleza del registro de los hechos en pleno Siglo XVI es que los cronistas disputan la veracidad del relato. Introducción: Al abordar la temática de la industrialización desde una perspectiva regional es posible descubrir que en algunas localidades, como Valdivia, predominó -al menos durante un cierto tiempo- la actividad del sector secundario por sobre la del primario, y que se generó un modelo de crecimiento y desarrollo económico distinto al observado en la economía decimonónica del centro y del norte del país. Previamente es necesario precisar que cuando nos referimos a "industrialización", y aun cuando existen distintas definiciones que intentan dar cuenta de este complejo fenómeno, la entendemos como un proceso que tuvo lugar sólo en determinadas regiones de diversos países europeos y de los Estados Unidos, y que implicó no sólo la utilización de importantes innovaciones tecnológicas, el uso intensivo de cuantiosas sumas de capital o la introducción de formas capitalistas en la organización de la producción, sino también profundos cambios en la estructura agraria, social, política y económica, que hicieron de estas sociedades, regiones y países industrializados o modernos1. A partir de lo anterior es posible afirmar que todo análisis acerca de tos procesos de industrialización en Chile debe partir de la base que estos, en ningún caso, lograron poner en marcha una "revolución industrial" propiamente tal, aun cuando sí pudieron, al menos en el ámbito local o regional, impulsar un cierto desarrollo de la actividad industrial, siguiendo algunos patrones de la de algunos de los países industrializados. Este trabajo, considerando las precisiones anteriormente expuestas, intenta caracterizar el desarrollo de los empresarios alemanes de Valdivia, partiendo de la pregunta de si la actividad por ellos emprendida presentó o no algunas de las características evidenciadas en los países industrializados, es decir, si su modelo de actividad industrial se basaba en el sistema de producción denominado como "fábrica", que entre otros elementos se caracterizaba por la utilización de máquinas -especialmente de vapor y posteriormente eléctricas-, por la centralización de la producción en un solo recinto, por la aplicación del principio de la división del trabajo y de técnicas productivas cada vez más refinadas, por cancelar los salarios a sus trabajadores en dinero efectivo y, finalmente, por su clara orientación al lucro, es decir hacia el mercado2. Con el objeto de poder responder adecuadamente a esta cuestión, comenzamos con una breve descripción de la ciudad de Valdivia antes del arribo de los alemanes hacia 1850; enseguida se realiza una caracterización de este grupo, donde se considera, entre otros elementos, su perfil profesional y educacional. A continuación, el análisis se centra en la revisión de cuatro sectores productivos desarrollados íntegramente por empresarios de origen germano: las fábricas de cerveza, la industria del cuero, las destilerías de alcohol y los astilleros. Finalmente, y para tener una visión más amplia de las actividades y de algunos de los vínculos socioeconómicos desarrollados por estos empresarios, revisaremos el papel que ellos desempeñaron en el ámbito del transporte marítimo y en la organización de asociaciones de carácter económico, en cuanto instituciones que cumplían con la función de representar sus intereses ante la sociedad. Por último, cabe señalar que el arco de tiempo que cubre este trabajo es el de 1850-1914. La primera fecha marca el inicio del proceso de inmigración germana hacia Chile3 y la segunda representa el comienzo de una época de profundos cambios, que alteraron no sólo el desarrollo de las industrias alemanas en Valdivia, sino también parte importante del contexto nacional e internacional.
